3/31/2010MD 657 Roadway Widening Project Between Old Beechwood and Garrett County Line
This spring, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will widen MD 657 (Douglas Hill Avenue) between Old Beechwood Road and the Garrett County line in Allegany County.   SHA will complete the project in the fall, weather permitting.

MD 657 is a narrow, one-lane, winding mountainside road, that serves as a connection for the town of Lonaconing to Garrett County.  Due to the narrow width of the roadway, it is sometimes difficult for opposing vehicles to safely pass each other because of the adjacent hillside.

SHA will widen the road to provide additional clearance for two-way traffic to safely pass each other.  Pavement markings will be installed to clearly define travel lanes.  As part of the project and to facilitate the pavement marking installation, SHA will resurface MD 657 between Old Beechwood Road and the Garrett County Line.

SHA will detour traffic during construction to allow for ample equipment access and working area for crews.  Access to local residences will be maintained throughout construction.  SHA is implementing the following detour:

Motorists east of the Douglas Hill Avenue/MD 36 (Georges Creek Road) intersection traveling west will be detoured south on MD 36 to south on MD 935 (Lower Georges Creek Road), right on Bartlett Run Road, left onto Michael Road, left onto Russell Road, right on Westernport Road, right on Swamp Road, and right onto Avilton Lonaconing Road/Douglas Hill Avenue.

Motorists west of the closure area traveling to Lonaconing or points east will follow Avilton Lonaconing Road, turn left onto Swamp Road, left onto Westernport Road, left onto Russell Road, right onto Michael Road, right onto Bartlett Run Road, and left onto MD 935 north, back to the Douglas Hill Avenue intersection with MD 36.

Motorists should allow an additional 30 minutes for travel time during the detour.  SHA apologizes for any inconvenience and thanks motorists in advance for their patience and understanding during construction.  For additional information about the project please contact:
